Gavin Edwards
Gavin Edwards
French Horn、Natural Horn
Born next to a windmill in Stansted to a large and artistic family, his parents are well known book illustrators and his family all play instruments, except his elder brother who played the viola.
Gavin remembers seeing a concert on television when he was four years old and was really impressed with the horns. So, when he was given the chance by the Inner London Education Authority, he started to learn the horn with Richard Martin at Haberdashers Aske’s school. Soon Gavin moved on to the Centre for Young Musicians at Pimlico where he was taught by Gordon Carr.
After this, Gavin gained a place at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he studied firstly with Richard Bissell and then with Anthony Chiddel. During his time at the Guildhall, Gavin met Anthony Halstead, who was Principal Horn with the Academy of Ancient Music and started to learn the Natural Horn with him. It was Anthony Halstead who started Gavin in the profession by sending him as far away as possible to play as Principal Horn with the Orchestra Symphonica de Tenerife.
Gavin reasoned that “A small rock in the middle of the Atlantic was a good place to make those early mistakes!” Annoyingly, He stayed there for only one season (Life was too easy!) before returning to haunt Mr. Halstead, joiming the Hanover Band as it was recording its’ series of Beethoven Symphonies. This period was a golden time for all the orchestras as the recording companies wanted new and exciting performances to release on the new Compact Discs.
Gavin was soon working as a regular player with all the “period” ensembles, becoming principal horn with The Hanover Band, The English Baroque Soloists, The Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique, The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, The Academy of Ancient Music, Florilegium, and Classical Opera.
